You’ve just bought a brand-new bird cage, brought it home, and set it up. Inside the box, you find those perfectly smooth, perfectly round wooden dowel perches. They look neat, they fit the cage perfectly, so they must be good for your bird, right?
Well, here is one of the biggest secrets in the pet industry: those standard dowel perches are actually terrible for your bird’s health. In fact, leaving them as the main sitting spots in a cage is a gaurantee you’ll be taking your bird to the vet soon.
Increased risks
Imagine if you had to spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, walking on a perfectly flat concrete floor in the exact same pair of stiff shoes. Your feet would start to ache, cramp up, and develop horrible blisters.
Because the standard perches are the exact same diameter from end to end, your bird’s feet are locked into the exact same gripping position all day and night.
-
- Pressure sores and calluses
- Arthritis and cramping
- Bumblefoot (Pododermatitis): A painful, severe bacterial infection on the foot pads that can become life-threatening if left untreated.
Wood perches massage your birds feet
In the wild, branches aren’t manufactured in a factory. They twist, turn, get thick, get thin, and have rough, bumpy bark. This randomness is actually nature’s perfect gym design for birds.
-
- A natural branch changes thickness and shape along the way, your bird’s feet are constantly flexing, stretching, and gripping at different angles. This keeps their foot muscles strong and flexible, completely preventing those nasty pressure sores.
- Textured bark provides natural friction. As your bird walks across it, their nails get safely rubbed down, meaning fewer stressful nail-clipping sessions for both of you! Plus, birds love to rub their beaks against rough bark to clean them after eating.
- Birds love textures. Stripping the bark off a natural wood perch provides hours of fantastic mental enrichment and satisfies their biological urge to chew.
Say NO to sandpaper perch covers
If a pet store clerk tries to sell you sandpaper covers to slip over your dowel perches to “keep nails trim,” step away! Sandpaper perches are incredibly abrasive. They act like literal cheese graters on the soft bottoms of your bird’s feet, causing painful cuts and infections. Stick to real, textured wood instead.
